Updated: Sep 14, 2021

In this episode of Magical Mornings, we featured David Rocaberti. He is an award winning freelance photographer based in Madrid, Spain. He has been working as a photo journalist and a travel photographer ever since he got his master’s degree in document photography back in 2007.

Here’s the interview of David Rocaberti with UnitePod.

Q. You have been doing some fascinating work out there. All our listeners would like to know a bit more about your journey. How did it kick start and reach to a point where you are today?

David: My journey as a photographer started a long time ago. I first liked to travel around the world and during my travel I found that the best way to express what my eyes were seeing was photography. So then I started to give my time to learn the techniques. I started by reading books and learn every possible thing I could learn in the stages and taking bit of everything under the sun. Then after a short period I just realized that I need to go to school to learn properly from good professionals and that’s how I got my masters degree in Documentary photography. After my graduation I started to work for newspapers and gathered the needed experience to start my career as a professional photographer.

Q.You have bagged many awards for your photography. Can you tell us more about it and how do you feel about it?

David: Every time I have gathered an award, I felt great. I can’t deny that. It’s a clear sign for you that you are doing things right; you are going in the right direction and all the effort it took you to gather really paid off. However, I strongly believe that there are much more important things than awards. It really work well for ego but finally winning one of these is like winning a lottery. Whenever I am in an exhibition, I usually mingle with people. People who don’t know how I look like so they don’t know that they are talking to the author of the pictures they are seeing and I ask them about how they feel about the pictures beholding. Sometimes its really amazing finding what people really think about your work. When they see the pictures that you want them to see, its certainly rewarding. Sometimes you even find out that your pictures only shed some emotion on people that you haven’t felt. So this is more rewarding than getting these.

Q. Tell us more about your childhood and how did it moulded you into the person you are today?

David: I can see myself as a very happy person for I was raised by the fortataple. My friends have always been do united and they just come by all the ideas and passing them through me and made me the person I really am. They were beaten by the travel blog to so they personally understand my need to see the world and travel as much as I can and that really made me so happy. They have always been so supportive.

Q. You have collaborated with many different national and international brands and hotels. How did it go for you?

David: Every time I have worked for brands or hotels, there has been a different story. It depends on the team you are working with. But as a rule of thumb, I can tell you that big brands are big for a reason so they have the best professionals working for them and when you find out that you are one of them because they choose you to be a part of their team, it feels really nice. This is a really nice way to know that you are doing things in a right way.

Q. What are the best resources that have helped you along the way?

David: I think tenacity and preservance is the key element in this game. I have learned from my childhood that if you want to get something, you must work so hard for it and being so reminding to yourself as far as your work and it will really lead you to gather a very fruitful career and that’s what I am trying to do.

Q. What is that one myth about your profession that you want to debunk?

David: It’s a really good point. As a travel photographer, people tend to think that my job is an easy one. It’s really cool and I get paid for basically going on holidays and basically hidden off much more work than that. To be honest, whenever I travel for work, I work 24 hours a day and I am happy if I am able to sleep for 2 or 3 hour per night.

Q. If you could step into my shoes, what would you have asked yourself that I didn’t?

David: I believe life is shorter than we think it actually is. Our time here is limited so I think we should make the most of it all the time. And I think everyone should once ask this question to them is: Am I happy with this job? Am I really happy working at the place I do and doing the things I do? And if the answer is yes, so I think you are a very lucky person. And if the answer is no, then I think you have time to change things.

Q. What message do you have for our listeners and all your fans and where can they connect with you?

David: I will tell you a secret. I am currently writing a book which is going to be called Arctic and will be released next fall. It will display my best pictures from Norway, Iceland and Sweden along with some texts written by me about my advice on how to travel in the Arctic Region and how to take pictures. There will be a dedicated chapter for people who want to learn to take pictures. And regarding where people can reach me, you can always reach me on my social media account on instagram or twitter which is always the same @davidrocarberti or just go and take a look on my work page that is www.davidrocaberti.com

David, I wish you all the best with your book writing and your absolutely stunning photography. Thank you for joining us here at UnitePod.

David: Thank you for inviting me. I am glad to be on this podcast.
